Campion, Edmund
(1540–81)
   Saint, Missionary and Martyr.
Campion was born in London, and was educated at the University of Oxford. In 1569 he was ordained a deacon in the Church of England, but after a visit to Ireland, he renounced Anglicanism. He then enrolled in the seminary in Douai and in 1572 he was received into the Roman Catholic Church. He joined the Jesuit Order in 1573 and in 1580 he became part of a mission to reconvert England to Catholicism. He was a powerful speaker and achieved some success, but in 1581 he was arrested. Charged with conspiracy against Queen Elizabeth i, he was tortured and executed. He is regarded as a saint and martyr in the Roman Church.
